WAKISO CLINIC
Dr. Lawrence Mugisha
Wakiso has a large slum population. We have identified several potential clinic locations on the edge of the slum, including a larger building that can serve as both a clinic and the Head Office of our Non-Governmental Organisation: Clinic Africa (Uganda)

DOCTOR PROFILE: Dr. Lawrence Mugisha

Originally from Mbarara district where his parents were farmers, Lawrence left home at 12 to study in Kampala. He has practiced medicine since 2003 in various clinics since graduating from the Mbale School of Clinical Medicine. Lawrence wanted to progress his career and his options were to borrow many years salary to fund a clinic, work for 3+ years to try for a good post in a government hospital, or emigrate to the US or UK.

Clinic Africa has enabled Lawrence to stay in Kampala and run his own clinic. He now helps support his mother and four brothers who are still living in the village, and his brother who is studying at university in Kampala

CLINIC PROGRESS:

1. We identified a large building in the Wakiso slum that could be a clinic and our NGO Head Office.
2. We thoroughly cleaned and then partitioned the building to create treatment rooms and a pharmacy.
3. New locally sourced furniture and equipment is purchased.
4. Clinic entrance is completed and the clinic was opened to patients in NOVEMBER 2005.
